Tajweed

Qur'an, Classical

TAJWEED is an Arabic word, which means refinement, embellishment and perfection. It comes from the verb jawwada meaning refined, improved. Tajweed is the knowledge and application of the rules of reciting the Qur’an.

At the expansion of Islam huge number of people with other than Arabic mother tongue converted to Islam. They weren’t accustomed to the Holy Book’s language and when reciting they made errors that Islamic scholars feared would distort the meaning of the sacred text. They created a new science that regulated the correct recitation of the Qur’an based on the observation of highly regarded individuals whose were thought by the companion of the Prophet Mohammed (PBUH).This science is called Tajweed.
